Shogatsu means the first day of January, it is celebrated for the first 3 days or the first week of January.
These days are considered the most important holidays for us. During this time business and schools close for one to two weeks. It is also a time for people to return to their families which leads to the inevitable backlog of travelers.

On New Year's eve, bells (Joya No Kane) are rung at the local temples to speed out the old year.
Casual western style clothing is replaced with kimono on New Years day as people go for their first temple or shrine visit of the New Year.
At the temples they pray for health and happiness in the coming year.
Food, of course, is also a big part of Japanese New Year's celebrations.
Osechi-ryori is special dishes eaten on the first three days of the New Year.

Omicho-Ichiba is a famous local market located in the center of Kanazawa.
It started as a morning market some 400 years back.
In the feudal times, the market served as Kaga domain's food market which later became a public market in 1904.
Since then, it's been popularly known as "Kanazawa's Kitchen" and is always bustling with local residents as well as tourists.

About 170 shops in the market selling a variety of things such as fresh fish, vegetables, meat, side dishes, sweets, daily commodities, flowers and so on.
You won't miss the unique atmosphere of the place created by shop keepers' cheerful and loud shouts flying all around.
Omicho market is also known for its restaurants where you can eat excellent fresh Kaisen-don (seafood rice bowl), Sushi, etc.
